Installation of Provincial Grand Master
Thursday 4 September 2008
At 4pm Thursday 4 September 2008 a Special Meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge was opened at Hartlepool by Asst PGM Kenneth Edward Coatsworth Howe assisted by the Provincial Grand Wardens and W Bro George Anthony Currie acting as Deputy PGM.
The Pro Grand Master the Most Hon. the Marquess of Northampton entered in Procession accompanied by RtWBro Richard Anderson (PGM Yorkshire N&E Riding) as Senior Grand Warden, RtWBro Peter Magnay (PGM Northumberland) as Junior Grand Warden, WBro the Rev Frank Chappell (PAGChap) as Grand Chaplain and WBro Richard Murrant, PJGD as Grand Tyler. The Pro Grand Master occupied the Masters chair and after the appropriate salutations he addressed the Brethren on the objects of the meeting.
VWBro Norman Eric Heaviside, Past Master of Benfeldsyde Lodge, No 7807 (Blackhill), Nevill Lodge of Installed Masters No 9441 (Darlington) and Durham Lodge of Installed Masters, No 4441 (Durham City), Past Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden, Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Past Grand Sword Bearer, Provincial Grand Master designate entered the Lodge in a procession of 6 Brethren representing the oldest lodges in the Province and WBro Dr Tony Whitfield, Worshipful Master of Benfeldsyde Lodge carrying a cushion on which lay the Provincial Grand Masters chain of office.
After VWBro C Nigel R Brown, Grand Secretary had read the patent VWBro Heaviside took the obligation of his office and was installed and invested as Provincial Grand Master in and over the Masonic Province of Durham by the Pro Grand Master Most Worshipful Bro the Marquess of Northampton.
The proceedings were coordinated by WBro James Martin Long, DGDof C as Grand Director of Ceremonies, assisted by W Bro’s Jervis Kay, Maj the Hon Andrew F C Wigram, and G D A Elgood as Deputy Grand Directors of Ceremonies.
RtWBro Norman Eric Heaviside, Provincial Grand Master installed and invested Asst PGM WBro Denovan Keith Wilson as the Deputy Provincial Grand Master and reappointed Assistant Provincial Grand Masters Kenneth Edward Coatsworth Howe, George Clark and Denis Edward Lascelles. 2 new Assistant Provincial Grand Masters were then obligated, installed and invested.
David George Carney, initiated in June 1977 into St Paul Lodge No 3242, Jarrow by his father WBro James Irvine Carney, WM in 1987, founding SW of Palmer Lodge at Hebburn, becoming its WM in 1989 & again in 2003, a joining member Beamish Temple Lodge 9815 was first appointed to Provincial rank as PProvJGW in 1996 and received Grand Rank in 2006 as PAGDC.
John Lockhart Webster followed his grandfather and father into the Craft and was initiated into Old Dunelmian Lodge No.8100 in Durham City on the 13th January 1989 becoming WM in 1996. In his home town of Stockton on Tees he is a member of Lodge of Freedom No. 4027 becoming WM in 1998. In 2003 he served as ProvSGW in the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham. The newly installed AsstPGM’s were allocated responsibility for the East and South areas respectively.

Prior to closing the meeting the Provincial Grand Master invested WBro George Anthony (Tony) Currie with a Past Assistant Provincial Grand Masters collaret. In presenting this the PGM paid tribute to Tony for his many years dedicated service to the Province particularly as an exceptional Director of Ceremonies from 1997 to 2005.
The day had begun at 8am with practices for the Craft and Chapter meetings. At 11am a Convocation of Grand Chapter had been opened by Lord Northampton in his capacity as Pro 1st Grand Principal and E Comp Norman Eric Heaviside was installed and invested as Grand Superintendent in and over the Province of Durham. This was followed by the reappointment of E Comp Raymond Gregory Snaith as his Deputy Grand Superintendent, E Comp Derek Warneford as Provincial 2nd Grand Principal and E Comp Peter Athen Smith as Provincial 3rd Grand Principal.
From 1pm to 3pm a combined Chapter and Craft celebratory luncheon was held at the Mayfair, Seaton Carew attended by over 300 Durham Brethren and guests including visiting PGM Jack Price (East Lancs); The Rt Hon Lord Barnard and Dr Alan Martin Davison, Durham Past PGMs and 2 visiting Past PGM’s, John Hale (Cumberland and Westmorland) and John Raylor (Yorkshire North and East Ridings). After a sumptuous banquet including cauliflower and broccoli soup; a cold meat and salmon salad; deserts and cheese board, the usual Masonic Toasts were honoured. The Most Honourable the Marquess of Northampton responded to the toast to Grand Officers and proposed a toast to The Rt W Provincial Grand Master designate Norman Eric Heaviside.
On behalf of all brethren and companions of Durham Province Bro Heaviside presented Lord Northampton and the other members of the Installing delegation specially commissioned Sunderland glassware. These impressive clear glass paperweights were hand crafted in traditional Masonic colours of blue and white at the national glass centre. It is hoped these will provide the Pro Grand Master and his party with a lasting memory of a very happy day marking another significant milestone in the history of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham.
